Geishas, whilst iconic for their beauty, elegance, and performance skills, also carry with them the stigmatisation of being prostitutes. Popular views on geishas are informed by stereotypes. Without knowledge of the culture, viewing geishas as artists over prostitutes has proved problematic. Their unique way of life and long traininghas seen them act as skilled entertainers, performers, and hostesses; only some sell sexual services. Geishas traditionally are not high-class prostitutes; this label is not a fair characterisation of their work.

Prostitution in ancient Rome was legal and licensed. In ancient Rome , even Roman men of the highest social status were free to engage prostitutes of either sex without incurring moral disapproval, as long as they demonstrated self-control and moderation in the frequency and enjoyment of sex. At the same time, the prostitutes themselves were considered shameful: most were either slaves or former slaves, or if free by birth relegated to the infames , people utterly lacking in social standing and deprived of most protections accorded to citizens under Roman law , a status they shared with actors and gladiators , all of whom, however, exerted sexual allure. Most prostitutes were slaves or freedwomen, and it is difficult to determine the balance of voluntary to forced prostitution. Because slaves were considered property under Roman law, it was legal for an owner to employ them as prostitutes.
Whores in Walls
Pompeii was destroyed in A. Among the buildings was the two-story brothel with 10 rooms — five on each floor — and a latrine. The upper floor was for higher-ranking clients. The stone beds were covered with mattresses and each room has names engraved in its walls — possibly those of the prostitutes and their clients. The building was unearthed in and has undergone several restorations since, most recently in , officials in Pompeii said.
A brothel , bordello , or whorehouse is a place where people engage in sexual activity with prostitutes. However, for legal or cultural reasons, establishments often describe themselves as massage parlors , bars , strip clubs , body rub parlours, studios, or by some other description. Sex work in a brothel is considered safer than street prostitution. Around the world, attitudes towards prostitution and how and if it should be regulated vary considerably, and have varied over time. Part of the discussion impacts on whether the operation of brothels should be legal, and if so, to what sort of regulations they should be subjected.
